A devastating fire in Sajek Valley has destroyed 94 resorts, cottages, shops, and homes. The fire broke out at the popular tourist destination in Rangamati on Monday (February 24, 2025) at around 1 PM. After five hours of effort, the fire was brought under control by 5 PM.
Cause and Damage of the Sajek Fire
According to local sources, the fire originated from a resort named Eco Valley in Sajek. Within moments, it spread to nearby cottages, shops, and homes. According to Subarna Debbarma, the president of the Sajek Resort-Cottage Owners Association, the fire completely destroyed:
• 32 resorts
• 35 homes
• 20 shops
• 7 restaurants
Challenges in Controlling the Fire
Due to the absence of a fire service station in Sajek Valley, controlling the fire was delayed. Fire service units from Khagrachari Sadar, Panchhari, and Dighinala responded, with a total of 11 units working to bring the fire under control. Local residents reported that the lack of a fire service station in such a crucial tourist destination led to massive losses.
Temporary Travel Restrictions for Tourists
Rangamati Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Habib Ullah has announced a temporary travel restriction to Sajek. An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway, and assurances have been given that assistance will be provided to those affected.
Safety Measures and Future Plans for Sajek
Local residents demand the urgent establishment of a fire service station in Sajek, a popular tourist hub. Additionally, there are discussions about enhancing fire safety measures and integrating modern firefighting technology to ensure better protection for tourists and residents.
